Volume 2, Winter Issue 2010
Letter From the 2009-2010 SDS Vice President
My name is Marlene Ramirez, and I am the new Vice President for Sigma Delta Sigma 2009-2010. Because many of you might not know me, I would like to take some space to introduce myself. This 2009/2010 school year I am a senior majoring in International Development Studies and minoring in Spanish, and I am proud to be part of SDS’s Pi class. I am very excited to meet all of you this year. This year we are planning many new and fun ways to have alumni and actives interact in a professional and lively environment. For the upcoming year we are looking to have professional panels where alumni like yourself share your experiences and advice on post-grad life, careers or future endeavors.
This year I want to create sophisticated alumni events where both alumni and actives can bond and have fun. Your feedback regarding events that would interest you (i.e. fancy dinner or girls night out in the town) is necessary and appreciated. Knowing the location or atmosphere you feel more inclined to be in is important to us. I really hope to have a big turnout because our SDS alumni are the women this sorority looks up to, and I know many of us would love to learn from all of you.
If you have any questions or comments about anything I am providing my email below. Thank you for your time and I can’t wait to see you guys at our events!
Sincerely,
Marlene Ramirez

Sister Spotlight: Kristen Kido
December’s Sister Spotlight featured ∑∆∑ Alpha Chapter alumnus Kristen Kido. Here is an excerpt:
Name something that can always put a smille on your face? “When someone reads your mind… like when, for example, you’re really craving a muffin (or something) and then your friend shows up with a muffin. That’s always great.”

Sisters in Action: Help Haiti Benefit
The recent earthquake in Haiti has definitely shaken the country to the core and many relief agencies are in need of help and funds. SDS UCLA, Epsilon class, alumnus Priti Patel organized the “Help Haiti” Benefit. The benefit took place Saturday, January 23rd from 8-10pm at Circa Lounge in San Francisco. The fundraiser collected $10 donations at the door. 100% of donations went to Doctors without Borders, as they continue to set up mobile hospital camps and provide food, water, shelter and medical care to those in need. SDS alumni Jennifer Benson, Runa Patel, Simeen Dadlani, Alina Sy Chachra, Sonya Gupta, Shilpa Patel and Nimisha Gandhi showed their support at the event.
Visit www.doctorswithoutborders.org for more information on the organization including ways you can get involved or donate money and resources.

Excerpt from Babies, Babies, and More Babies!
By Autumn Love, Alpha Chapter, Iota Class
“You’re casually strolling through the mall, about to walk into JCrew, Banana, or Vickie – but something catches your eye – no, not the Cinnabon, or the greek god modeling for Abercrombie&Fitch – no, it’s a rosy-cheeked baby staring up at you! For some strange (perhaps biological) reason, you cannot look away …”

Words of Wisdom
By Corina Lopez, Alpha Chapter, Lambda Class
“The ones that know something know that they know nothing at all.”
SDS Alpha Chapter Formal
By Angel Clarke, Alpha Chapter, Kappa Class
The ∑∆∑ Alpha Chapter Formal, held Friday, May 8th at Castaway Restaurant and Banquet Hall in Burbank, was a night of good fun, good food, and great memories. When one of the actives first asked me to attend formal I was hesitant to agree. What if I didn’t know anyone there and felt out of place? It’s been two years since I graduated from UCLA! Well all of my worries were squashed when I walked into the beautifully decorated banquet hall and was welcomed with open arms by the UCLA actives as well as Beta Chapter sisters. To my surprise, I wasn’t the only alumni present. Sothary Van (Alpha Chapter, Xi Class) also attended the formal. Together we enjoyed a hosted bar, delicious meal, and a well-prepared presentation consisting of superlatives and the Sister of the Year award, which was presented to the 2008-2009 president Ankita Nigam (Alpha Chapter, Omicron Class). Although formal is a different experience as an alumni and I didn’t know everyone, I enjoyed my time and felt the benefits of sisterhood. Thank you to the current actives of ∑∆∑ for making me feel welcome and congratulations for putting on a great formal!
